Gilles Grethen Quartet

Luxembourg guitarist Gilles Grethen’s quartet, with Vincent Pinn (trumpet & flugelhorn), Gabriele Basilico (double bass) and Michel Meis (drums), convinces with a rich sound diversity and compositions oscillating between traditional and modern jazz.

Warm harmonies and lyrical melodies, combined with a captivating rhythm and underlined by Grethen’s warm yet vibrant guitar sound, are the ingredients of their music. Both motives developed in unison and bold improvisations reveal the complicity of the four musicians.

CHROMA

From their first meeting, Sebastian Voltz and Gilles Grethen felt a strong musical attraction. Piano and guitar seemed to complement each other, effortlessly blending their timbres.

Piano and guitar are rare duo partners – Gilles Grethen and Sebastian Voltz take advantage of this. In their interplay they paint colorfully, weave their rhythms into a dense yet always transparent fabric and skillfully play with the fact that both instruments have the same abilities.

Chamber music interplay, lively, free and intuitive.

Linq

Have you ever yearned for the freshness of Hip-Hop to be delivered with a punk rock energy while simultaneously being elevated to the highest standard of musical virtuosity and freedom by modern-day Jazz?

Well, no need to look further than Mateus Wojda’s brand new fusion-potpourri called LINQ. Rather a delicately cooked gourmet dish than a brutely put together ratatouille, the project links all of Wojda’s influences in a true cross-over and boundary pushing fashion. LINQ embodies the frontman’s childhood dream to fully express and truly present himself to music enthusiasts and casual listeners alike.

Albeit a very intimate project initiated by Wojda, LINQ is powered by the expertise and technical grandeur of John Wolter (drums), Pit Dahm (keys), Pierre Cocq-Amann (sax) and Gilles Grethen (guitar). The young quintet uses its musical eloquence to constantly evolve and express themselves in pure musical honesty.

Between Worlds (2024)

Gilles Grethen Big Band

This project was launched in September 2023 and recorded in November 2023 at Artikuss in Zolwer, Luxembourg. The mixing and mastering were done by renowned sound engineer Michael Perez Cisneros (Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ari Hoenig, Gilad Hekselman, …).

The music performed is new and was composed specifically for this band by Gilles Grethen. The new album will feature just under an hour of music, referencing important elements from Gilles’ life.

The entire album revolves around memories from Gilles’ life. “Bryant Park” is a well- known park in New York (between 40th and 42nd Street and 6th and 7th Avenue), where he spent a lot of time in 2019 and composed the melody for this piece. The energy and the people in the park inspired him so much that he went there every morning to drink his coffee and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.

“Old Friends” and “Buddy” show that the album is not only about places from Gilles’ life, but also about people who accompanied him, influenced him, enriched his life, and made it more beautiful. When he still lived in Luxembourg, he often met his friends in a special place: “Pitcher.” Anyone who knows „Pitcher“ doesn’t need an explanation as to why that is and why Gilles decided to dedicate one title to this place.

“Prelude in D Minor” is mostly about nostalgia. The idea for the piece came to Gilles after listening to Esbjörn Svensson’s track of the same name, and he immediately felt transported back in time to his youth—a time full of beautiful memories, but also some not-so-beautiful ones.

As a great cinephile, Gilles has always had an interest in film music and has also composed music for films. This is how the piece “Music for a Sad Movie” came to be—a title that probably speaks for itself.
